For all the reasons there are to not do social marketing, there are obviously way more to get involved in social marketing.  Sure something could go wrong, and there is risk in everything we do.  Ever drive a car?  Think about those risks!

If you are sensible and educated you should do fine and THERE ARE ALWAYS RISKS!

Your quick and dirty social tutorial is as follows:

get a facebook account
create a facebook fan page
create a twitter account
Set your blog post to update to twitter and facebook
Be interesting!
Get involved in conversations on facebook.

Why so much facebook?  People spend more time on facebook than anywhere else online by far. Go now. Facebook. Customize your accounts.
