Oh boy do we love content! That’s the real substance of your site! Of course you want to dress your site up, but it’s the charm that pours out on the page that creates the romance between your site and the visitor. It is truly an art to say what needs to be said in a way that captures 2 different audiences. Search engine spiders and humans. Keyword ratios and compelling sales hook aside, it’s all about getting to the heart of what they want. You either have it or you don’t, and they’ll know pretty quickly once they start reading.
Links
You need links. With the right links, your site rank improves. Easy. Why are backlinks important you ask? Great question. A back link is a vote. Whenever another site has a link on their site to your site, the search engines count it as a vote for your website. And, the site with the most votes wins. Almost. Links are just one factor of several (albeit a very important one) when it comes to search engines ranking your pages.
Backlinks also bring visitors to your site. The more relevant the voting site’s subject is to yours, the better. Notice we don’t even mention PR (PageRank).

Clean Code
Not as exciting as content or links. But it’s like having your shirt all misbuttoned (is that a word?) Your glasses are crooked and your shoes on the wrong feet. You might be a great site, but whose going to take the time to find out. Code errors happen all the time, especially with all the different browsers out there (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc). And spiders like smooth easy paths, broken code sends them off in some other direction. So the code, even though it is behind the scenes, makes a big difference in the presentation and ranking of your site.
