Working for the people, Lyle wanted to be personable and approachable on his website, just like he is in life. There are quite a few calls to action on the site. From the Read More buttons and the quick form to the large Get Help Now button. It’s clear this is a site of action and this attorney and his team are ready to help! The contact information is found on every page of the website, and so is the reminder of no fees unless they recover. There are also several different languages used on the site to help serve the diverse market Masnikoff and Associates reaches. We are very pleased with the site and so is Lyle. Next is an SEO campaign so his site can be found first page on google for most likely searched terms.

Smell My Car Lame

As a once enthusiastic and now bored to sleep Nascar fan, I forced myself to watch the Bristol race where I saw SmellMyCar.com on a car. I was just awake enough to catch it and just bored enough to check it out online. Checking out the site I was immediately annoyed and wanted to know who to blame. I was annoyed because I took the time to check the site out and it was a busy vomitous blur.

Selling unique car smelly thingies is not exactly a glamorous job. This site takes that seriously by avoiding glamorous and going straight for blech. It’s not all terrible to be fair, just mostly. Rather than pick out all the elements and explain them I will just list a few and move on to my real annoyance.

No clear call to action
Too many colors are distracting
Lack of info on the product that would compel me to purchase
Why would I sign up for their newsletter?
I do not understand the product images
Why list diffusers if you have none?

Anyway, that’s enough of that. What really bugs me is that this site was not set up to make the most of the potential traffic arriving from the advertising. That bugs me because businesses spend a lot of money for advertising to have it be poorly executed is frustrating. I really feel for the clients who tell us their horror stories of past experiences, money wasted. So they come to us skeptical and maybe a little jaded and I don’t blame them.

So who’s to blame? .speedwaymarketingsolutions dot com I’m not even going to give them a link. What really fires me up? Their own site is incomplete! Lorem Ipsum my friends! Or did you mean to have latin hyperlink son your website?

I am probably being to hard on the speedwaymarketing company. I’m sure they are very busy, hopefully they did their best, maybe they are just getting started… I can only imagine what a creative and thorough team could have done with that campaign. Some effective design work and calls to action, some attention to selling and not just trying to “look cool”.

Every business deserves a site that can effectively convert visitors who are potential clients for the products and services offered.

Search and Replace in WordPress

While there may be some very cool code related means of searching and replacing text in wordpress, I am not a programmer and I am not that patient. And MySQL is not where I like to play. A site we are working on changed their company name mid build. This is a local Palm Beach Florida business that is part of a national franchise. With over 100 uses of their name on two different sites I was not thrilled about the editing required. Since the wordpress community has been around a while and dealt with just about every issue possible when it comes to working with wordpress issues, I figured there was a good chance I could find a plugin for that.

I went to the admin panel-> Plugins->Add New and searched “text replace”. After a scan of the first page I saw a couple possibilities. I click on install to check compatibility and see what other functionality notes I can find. I prefer a plugin that is up to date with the current wordpress version and is recently updated. None of the available plugins met this criteria. Sometimes a lower functioning skill like find and replace, something that should be pretty compatible no matter what the version, will have a chance at still working. I backed up the site before activating any new plugins. Better safe that sorry right? The first two were a bust but the third plugin worked like a charm. “Search & Replace” was very simple to use and when I was done I removed it from the site. Easy, fast effective and a plugin I would recommend for the average user who runs into a need to search and replace text on anywhere on their wordpress site.

Quick WordPress Tips

As a site owner and a site designer I know how easy it is to forget regular maintenance tasks. Consider this your reminder:

Update your wordpress version. Make sure you back up your site files first. Easy to do with a back up plugin or through your host.
Update your plugins. Check the plugin forum or website first to see if there are any issues reported with the update. A google search will help too.
Check your site in all the major browsers. IE is notorious for messing things up…
Do you monitor your sites uptime? Might be a good idea.
Have you made a backup lately? If you just read this you better do it now
Are your images optimized? They should be as small as possible for better loading times.
Is your xml sitemap updated. That could be useful?
Who are you pinging everytime you write a post?
Does your site have a clear call to action?
Is the look and functionality still credible or do you need an upgrade?

That’s a quick list of reminders for you to have the best possible wordpress site.
